On the 4thFebruary 2017, Atlantic-Pacific Tang Soo Do Federation opened the 7th annual Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) tour: The Art of Street Defense in Albuquerque NM.  Kwan Jang Nim John St. James, 8th Dan, covered practical street defense, flow sets. Il Soo Sik (one step), and knife & gun defense.

The TAC tour was separated into two sessions, a morning session and an afternoon session.  The morning session covered beginning techniques while the afternoon session covered advanced techniques.
The morning session not only included the beginner and intermediate belts from Thunder Martial Arts Academy (TMAA) but also invited non-members to learn about street defense.  The morning session had 22 students from TMAA beginners and intermediate belts and four additional nonmembers invited to learn from Kwan Jang Nim.  The session was nonstop for two hours of intense, exciting training session that covered blocks such as the soft block and the v-block, strikes such as the knee strike both vertical and horizontal as well as a strike to the bicep, and valuable tips such as “where there’s a joint there’s a balance point.”  The blocks and strikes were then combined together in three or less moves to optimize street defense tactics.
The afternoon session had 100% attendance of red belts and higher from TMAA as well as two guests, Bu Sabom Alan Arrington and his son Dawson.  Like the morning session the afternoon session was nonstop, exciting, and intense training session with the addition of an extra hour.  While there was a few common techniques between the two sessions, the afternoon session covered material appropriate for the advanced rank of the students.  The afternoon session started with three or less moves combined to optimize street defense and moved into knife and gun defense.  The three hours flew by as technique after technique was broken down, demonstrated and practiced.  In addition to techniques and combinations, pressure points and balance points were also discussed and practiced.
Both sessions wrapped up with a group picture full of smiles and more knowledge that can be retained, good thing a DVD was offered that will cover all the APTSD federation TAC tour sessions from 2016 and 2017.
In addition to the TAC tour, Kwan Jang Nim St. James provided one hour Certified Instructor Training (CIT) session the Friday before TAC Tour.  APTSDF believes in not just training martial artists but also building leaders.  The CIT program is designed to train leaders and give them the tools to do the same.  Very much like the TAC tour sessions the CIT was a nonstop hour packed sessions with valuable information that can be used by Kyosas and the Jo Kyos inside and outside of the dojang.
This was the first stop on 2017 TAC tour, and if you are interested in laptearning more about future sessions or learning about APTSD Federation, please visit their website: http://www.aptsdf.com/.  Learning from someone with as much knowledge and experience as Kwan Jang Nim St. James is an honor and a privilege.  Thank you to APTSDF for hosting a wonderful opportunity to learn about street defense, to Kwan Jang Nim St James for sharing his vast knowledge, to Bu Sabom Witterholt, TMAA owner, and everyone who helped make the first stop of APTSDF 2017 TAC tour a wonderful experience and a success.  Tang Soo!
