On the weekend of May 24th – 26th, the southeastern region of the Atlantic-Pacific Tang Soo Do Federation had its spring cycle Dan Shim Sa (Black Belt test) and review, as well as its annual championships in Flowery Branch, Georgia. As always, it was a great opportunity to renew friendships, test ourselves and strengthen our Tang Soo spirit.

The weekend began Friday night, with over 60 Black Belts and Cho Dan Bo (Black Belt Candidates) testing or reviewing at the Mulberry Creek Park & Recreation Center. The black belt test opened with the announcement of the high scores on the written test. Matthew Hyde of Birmingham Academy of Martial Arts scored the highest among the children (97/A+), and among the adults, Joe Clark of Karate World received a perfect score. The Black Belt test was quite challenging, which is the Federation’s tradition. Overall best of test was awarded to Cooper Joy for the children of Karate World and Ashley Bunn of Birmingham Academy of Martial Arts received best of test honors for the adults. It was a great night watching all these students working towards their next level of training. It was really a great test!

We were back at the recreation center early the next morning for the judges meeting and black belt competition. Many color belts came early to see the exciting Black Belt competition which ended well past 12 noon with as many black belts that competed. We had over 207 registered competitors from as far away as Texas.

After the black belt competition, we began the opening ceremonies. The Grand Championship Cups for the black belt competition were awarded to Laura Lee Sandberg of Karate World for the women and Chad Hinkle of West Texas Karate for the men. Following this were black belt presentations for candidates who had successfully completed their six (6) month probationary period.

The tournament lasted into the late afternoon, and was a great success. All of the students performed with great Tang Soo Spirit. I was proud to see all the color belts encouraging each other, and demonstrating not only great technique but great sportsmanship. We are truly blessed to have such a strong family feel in the Federation. The brotherhood and sisterhood was palpable.

Saturday evening, approximately 60 Federation members and their families gathered at Vinny’s New York Style Pizza and Italian Grill in Buford, GA for an informal post championship dinner. Fun was had by all. Afterwards, all Masters and school owners met for our traditional leadership meeting with Kwan Jang Nim.

The weekend finished on Sunday, May 26th with Kwan Jang Nim and Federation senior Masters conducting an instructor exam for four (4) new candidates. Afterwards, the Grandmaster taught a one hour instructor’s clinic on Shil Ki or the practical application from the Pyung Ahn forms. The clinic was a great recap of our recent Federation TAC Tour which had well over 523 people attending.

Sr. Master Michael Jett and I were honored to host this weekend event. We would like to thank our students at Karate World of Buford for all their hard work in helping to make this a very successful event. We would also like to thank those from all over the region for pitching in this weekend.

Most of all, we would like to thank Kwan Jang Nim for bringing us all together for such a wonderful weekend.
