On July 18-19, the Atlantic-Pacific Tang Soo Do Federation hosted its 2008 International Championships at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Several hundred people attended the event and there were competition divisions for weapons, free sparring, breaking, traditional forms, team forms, and creativity.

Grand Champion cups were presented to Mr. Will Potter of Birmingham Academy of Martial Arts and Mrs. Laura Lee Sandberg of Karate World for best overall results in the male and female Black Belt divisions. In addition, APTSDF Master and senior instructors performed a demonstration featuring weapons, self-defense, and a traditional form presentation.

Grandmaster John St. James, APTSDF President and Founding Master, set the theme for the tournament by reminding competitors to remember two keys concepts: kyum son (humility) and shi sun (focus). Examples of these themes were clear throughout the day, from the neatly arranged lines of shoes formed by competitors before entering the championship floor to the control and precision exhibited in free sparring, weapons, and empty hand hyungs.

After the championship, participants gathered at Jillian’s for a banquet and awards presentation, followed by a night of bowling. The following day, participants and their families joined together at Lake Lanier Islands for a variety of activities including fun in the sun at the water park.
