The southeastern regional spring cycle Dan Shim Sa (Black Belt test) and annual championships took place in Cleveland, GA on April 20th and 21st. We started off with a great black belt test consisting of over 50 Black Belts and Cho Dan Bo (Black Belt Candidates) on Friday night April 20th. The test was a great demonstration of skill from all the participants, but we always have a few that stand out and go home with the coveted best of test trophies. For this test they were William Townsend for the adults and Katie Paris for the children, both from Eagle leadership Martial Arts.

Then on Saturday, the weekend continued with our regional championships with over 100 competitors. First up were the black belts who showed great martial arts skill and sportsmanship as well as their competitive spirit. That led to the awarding of the Grand Champion cups for both men and women which went to Joe Clark and Ivana Dalton, both from Karate World. Next the black belts went right back to judging for the color belt competition. Now it was time for the color belts to step into the ring. Some for the very first competition and some with years of experience, but everyone just as nervous and excited to do their best.
The Championships was great platform to continue the good work of the APTSD Foundation which is the Federation’s (501c3) non-profit charity to help those in need. This year, the Foundation is funding ten (10) at-risk kids from one of the poorest regions in the country to attend Internationals in July in Orlando at the B Resort & Spa. The children and teens are students of Master Kathleen Navarra and will be representing their at-risk schools (V-Town & Camden TSD). The Foundation is also sending these kids to Disney World! To this end, the Foundation partnered with the Points of Light Initiative and EarsToYou to help secure 10 to 20 Disney tickets. With the help of nearly 45 volunteers, we accomplished the following at this year’s Championships:
  • We created 40 complete comfort kits for servicemen and women and hospital/nursing home patients.
  • We also created 50 not quite complete comfort kits
  • We created 10 blankets with approximately 10 more commitments.
  • We wrote 25 “Thinking of You” cards and letters to hospital patients, servicemen and women, and memory care residents.
  • We helped clean gym equipment at the White County Recreation Center.
  • We awarded two lucky winners a total of four Disney tickets with a real value of $600 dollars!
After the Championships, everyone gathered at the Troll house in Helen, GA to have some good food and even better fellowship with our martial arts family. We are all looking forward to this summer when we can see each other again at the international championships from July 18th to the 21st in Orlando, Florida!
