On the weekend of October 20 -21, the New England Region of the Atlantic Pacific Tang Soo Do Federation (APTSDF) held their annual Regional Championship and fall Dan Shim Sa (Black Belt Test) in Dover New Hampshire. The event was hosted at Great Bay Karate and hosted by Sr. Master Antonio Rivera of Meriden, CT.  It was our honor to have Kwan Jang Nim St. James and Sr. Master Deborah Jett from Headquarters attend again this year.

This year’s event showcased over 80 competitors from several New England schools. The Black Belt competition began Saturday morning at 9:00 sharp and was demonstrative of the skill in the region.  Earning Grand Champion honors were Mr. Oleg Khodko, Sam Dan, men’s division and Ms. Noelle Drewicz, Sam Dan, women’s division, both from Cambridge Tang Soo Do, located in Cambridge, MA.

Opening ceremonies began at 11:00. A demonstration of traditional sword hyung and techniques was performed by Rivera Tang Soo Do of Meriden, CT.  During the opening ceremonies Samantha Maxwell and Peter Lorenz from Great Bay Karate students were presented with their Dan certifications by Kwan Jang Nim St. James. This presentation represented the successful completion of their six month probationary period since testing for their Black Belt in May. The highlight of the opening ceremonies was the presentation of 5th degree Master rank to Sr. Master Jason Duva from Cambridge, MA.  Very few martial arts students ever achieve such a high degree.

Black Belt candidates and all gup students’ competition began at the completion of the opening ceremonies. Students ranging in age from as young as 4 years old to students well into their 50’s competed in rank appropriate divisions. The competition reflected tremendous Moo Do spirit and everyone ended the day with a great sense of accomplishment.

Following the tournament a Championship dinner was held at Newick’s Restaurant in Dover, New Hampshire. Nearly 75 students and family attended the celebration. This was the second year in a row the championship dinner was held at Newick’s and this is sure to become a tradition within the New England Region.

On Sunday morning at 8:00 the Dan Shim Sa began with a one hour written exam. All students taking the written exam passed with flying colors and were allowed to take the physical exam which began at 9:00 a.m. sharp. The panel of five Masters and Kwan Jang Nim scrutinized every technique performed by the candidates. The candidates were required to perform multiple foot and hand combinations, all of their required forms, self-defense, rolls and falls as well as Kyuck Pa (breaking). Each candidate did extremely well at the test.

This is the second year that the New England Regional Tournament has been held in Dover, NH at Great Bay Tang Soo Do and its students look forward to the next Regional Tournament and the opportunity to host the New England Region's Tang Soo Do studios and students in the future.
